Lesson 6 of 6 — final lesson

The future of AI — what's actually coming

10 min readNo jargonPlain English

There are two dominant narratives about AI's future — one says it will solve all our problems, the other says it will threaten humanity. Neither is useful. The truth is more interesting and more nuanced than either extreme.

What's already here

AI as a capable assistant for text, images, and everyday tasks is mature and available to anyone today, for free. It's also built into apps you already use: Gmail, Google Docs, Microsoft Word all have AI features built in — you may already have access without realising it.

What's coming soon (1–3 years)

AI that takes actions on your behalf — booking appointments, managing your inbox, filling in forms — with your permission. Already in early testing.

Much better personalisation — AI tools that remember who you are, your preferences, and your history, adapting to you over time rather than starting fresh every conversation.

Concerns worth knowing about

Job displacement is a real concern — some routine tasks in many jobs will change. This is a legitimate societal challenge, not science fiction. But new roles will also emerge, as they have with every previous technological shift.

AI-generated misinformation is already happening. Practical upshot: be more sceptical of surprising content you see online, especially photos, videos, or quotes from public figures.

How to feel confident, not anxious

Keep learning, a little at a time. You don't need to understand how AI works — just stay gently curious.

Be a thoughtful user. Notice when AI answers feel off. Verify important information. These habits make you a better, safer user.

You're already ahead of most people. Having read all six lessons, you understand what AI is, what it can do, and how to use it safely. That's genuinely valuable — and will only become more so.

You now understand what AI is, how to use it safely, and where it's heading. That's more than most people know.
