Using Gemini for the first time

Lesson 2 of 6

Gemini is Google's AI assistant — and if you already use Gmail, Google Search, or YouTube, you're already in Google's world. That makes Gemini one of the most natural first steps into AI for most people. It's free, it works in your browser, and nothing needs to be downloaded or installed.

Why we recommend Gemini for beginners

It's made by Google, which most people already trust. It's completely free to start. It works on any device. And if you use an Android phone, it may already be built in.

Getting started — step by step

1

Go to Gemini

Open your browser and go to gemini.google.com — or search "Google Gemini" and click the first result.

Tip: Save it as a bookmark so you can find it easily next time.
2

Sign in with your Google account

If you already have a Gmail address, just click "Sign in" and use that. No new account needed — this is the big advantage of Gemini for most people.

3

You'll see a simple chat screen

There's a text box in the middle of the screen. Type your question there, just like you'd type a search into Google — except you can use full sentences.

4

Type something and press Enter

Try: "What's a good recipe for tomato soup?" Press Enter and Gemini will reply within seconds.

Tip: You can keep the conversation going — ask follow-up questions just like with a real person.

Things to try first

"Help me write a short email to cancel a dentist appointment. I can't make Tuesday."
"Plan a 3-day trip to Edinburgh for two people on a budget."
"I have chicken, lemons, and potatoes. What can I make for dinner?"
"Explain what 'type 2 diabetes' means in plain English."

One important rule

Always check important facts

Gemini can occasionally get things wrong — dates, names, statistics — and it sounds confident even when incorrect. For anything medical, legal, or financial, always verify with a professional.
